Hello all
I am in the process of trying to get a 1974 Johnson 25 hp to run and have a few questions I am hoping you can help with.
First - I had to take the gearbox apart and am not sure if the clutch dog needs replaced - it's got some wear on it but I've never done this before and therefore don't know if this is normal and acceptable or bad. I've attached 2 pictures showing the sides of the piece - one side has 2 concentric grooves in it and the other side has small "chunks" missing. Given the cost of these I would rather not replace it if it will still work, but I also don't want to put everything back together only to find out it doesn't shift right.
Would you replace this or will it still function? (I have no idea how it was working because among other things, the gearbox was locked up when I got it).

Also - can anyone tell me what the spring in the attached photo is called, what it does, and if maybe it is connected upside down? The problem is that the spring catches against the bolt head as you increase throttle, so I thought maybe it was clipped on upside down. However I've looked through various parts diagrams for this motor and can find no reference to the part, so now I'm wondering if I can just take it off and be done with it.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Joe
