I am looking for some help here. I am fairly new to outboard motors, but am fairly mechanically inclined.... I have a 1974 Johnson 6hp seahorse that my husband inherited from his uncle and it has sat for quite sometime now. So far I have cleaned the fuel filter, checked the spark plugs(Which are in new condition) cleaned the carburator. The only problem now is that the lower unit/gearcase was taken off so that we could check the condition of the gears, and propellor shaft. Now we are unable to figure out how to get the lower unit/gear case put back together. We have been able to get the gears back in place but when we try to put the cover back on there is a screw-like pin(for lack of better word) that is supposed to go on the side which will not fit thru the hole and cant figure out how it goes back on... Any suggestions would be great as I cant wrap my mind around this one!!!
Thanks

Screw like pin? ln the bottom half of gear case ?

Its the pin that supports the cradle and shifter lever assembly.

Diagram HERE might help.

We are talking about pin #28 and part #40

BTW worth reading Awakening a Sleeping Outboard on the FAQs board

Thanks Vic. S!
Yes those are the parts that I am talking about. I was trying to get the gearcase back on but couldnt quite figure out how that pin went in. I wanted to figure out how to put this part back together before I attempted to replace the gasket...

It sounds like the pivot pin....the philips head bolt that is the frequent topic raised by people who accidentally pull it instead of the drain plug when changing LU oil.
It should be installed before the gearcase goes together....with a new seal.

Thanks Tim...
So another words I should screw that pivot pin back into the spot along with a newseal. Then from there put the gearcase back together? I will have to try that when I get a chance to work on the motor again! Heres to hopin it will work :)

just as a quick note... The pivot pin wont fit through the hole on the shifter lever. So kinda stuck on how to do this... Hoping that I can get this fixed soon!

I've just done a complete reseal on my 1975 6HP 'rude and would not have been able to get it done without a repair manual.
I got one (OEM) off eBay for $20-. Best $20- I've spent in years! :)

There is no reason that that pin should not go back where it came from....unless you are trying a "slightly different" assembly arrangement. ;)

You trying to fit it through the right hole.
Not trying to fit it through the hole where the shift rod attaches?

 ;)

Just as a general point of reference, the pivot pin screws through/into the very bottom housing on that motor....the one with the skeg and the drain plug.

thanks to everyone who replied to this post, and gave me some pointers. I have finally figured it out and was able to get the pivot pin back in place.
