Goodafternoon Mariners, Ive been looking for a new boat for some time now, and Ive also been looking for a winter project, so why not combine them?! Found this old Sea Nymph, went and looked at it and the deck was terribly rotted and the motor was barley on the transom! So I looked on, found this old girl. 1974 Mako 17 ANGLER, boat weighs in at a hefty 1200lbs. The P.O stripped it already, and by the pictures it looks damn good! The deck, and stringers are out. The transom is still there, but needs to be replaced. One of the reasons im doing this is because I haven't been able to find any center console with the self bailing design, which is KEY for me!!!
I want to be able to take this boat out in the Boston Harbour, and possibly a little out of the harbour fishing (inshore) (weather depending) I love the layout of the boat, with the low cut transom. Ive hear alot of good things about these boats, and that the resale value is generally pretty good. If the boat turns out alright, Im going to keep it until im tired of it. Ive worked on one other boat, but it is nothing like a Mako, it was a 13' Runabout. This is a hole new ballpark for me, and Im going to need all the help I can get!!!!
Im planning to have the boat ready for next late spring/summer. I think I can get her done in time, but there is ALWAYS suprises....
The boat was listed for 2000$, I got him down to 1600, and it comes with alot." fuel tanks (1 internal, 1 external), console, new steering cables, stainless wheel, gps, depth finder, vhf, epoxy and polyester resin, fiberglass mat and woven, and more. " Im all for the boat, and it looks like it comes with a good bit. The console does not look like the original mako design, looks to be something out of an carolina skiff?! But thats ok, im make things work.
Ive got some questions about wiring things up to the helm, how abouts do most go at this? is there some was you do it under the deck? or do you make some sort of tube that goes to the transom to the CC. What about for the bow lights? How do you usually wire those under the deck?!
The motor is a mid 80's 90hp, im guessing a 86. He claims that it runs, but I dont know to what extent. Ive worked on these motors before and there pretty darn foolproof. Shouldnt be a big problem at all.
Now on the inside part of the boat, there are two large rectangle spaces that are open, I believe those are the recessed rod storage right?! Im not sure if he has these, Il see when I go down there.
For the transom, I plan to cut out the outer skin, and dig it out that way, then layer the new wood transom in. Ive seen this done on the internet before on these older makos. I know its not the "best" way of doing it but if done properly I believe it can work/
Also, what do you all used for wood?! Ive heard some people say that marine grade is the only way to go, and others saying that exterior plywood holds up just fine. Id like to believe the exterior will do the trick (for $$$ sake.) for the stringers what is the best way to go at it?! Also is the deck screwed down to the stringers ,or is it just resting ontop of it? Sorry, ive got alot of questions, and Im REALLY exited about the build!!! Now foam..... I know you put the deck in, and then drill a few holes to pour and vent it in, but how do you know how much you need?!
Sorry about all of the questions, I just want to be knowledgeable and know what im doing before I stick myself into it. Also comes with an easyloader trailer. After I get all the barebones stuff done, I want to make her pretty, I was thinking a nice seafoam color, and a white nonskid. DAMN. Another question. HOw do you paint the bottom the the boat without taking it off the trailer, I know it must be more time consuming, I just dont have the real estate to take it off and have the trailer there.
Thank you all, and enjoy the pictures!
