I am putting on a 4" shaft extension, the extension is used but is an original factory part. The problem is the drive shaft extension. I put it on the end of the shaft to feed it up through the intermidiate housing but the knuckle where it slides over the old crank won't fit through the entry point in the intermediate housing. I have the whole motor disassembled to get the extension inside the housing. My question is, can I ream out the entry point in the intermediate housing so it will go through? I can't imagine going through this major disassembly every time I change the water pump.

There were no factory extension kits for those engines only long and short engines so what ever you have is not built by Mercury, it's somerthing aftermarket and who knows how it works without instructions.

Re: 1974 Merc L6

I decided to say the heck with it and reamed it out. I only had to shave about .010 off of it to get the clearance. All seems to be fine. It is ready to go back together when the gasket kit comes in. Thanks for the info.
