1974 sea king 6hp coughing and spark pug gap?

hi all, was wondering if anyone could help me with my 1974 sea king 6hp outboard model #VWB52006, it fires righ up with the choke engaged and idles but it seems to cough every 5 seconds or so and when i turn off the choke it dies. also what NGK spark pug would i use and what would the gap be?

Plugs are BR8HS gapped to .030
Rebuild the carb

Sounds like the low speed jet is blocked?
The air screw (usually top front of the carb) needs to be set at 1 and 1/4 turn out for initial setting ,
