I am the owner of a 1975 150 horsepower mercury engine that's on a 1978 SeaRay 19'. The engine has not been run in two years and this holiday weekend we had the chance too. The problem is that the engine does not exactly run properly. First I used fresh premium fuel, none had been sitting in it either, and all the filters were clean. Well the boat would run in neutral great it would rev. However when I went to put it in gear it would only run at about 1000 rpms even though the throttle was wide open. I am 99.9999% sure that this is not a fuel related problem. I got the coil bench tested and it turns out it was cracked and severly inhibited. Will replacing the coil solve the problem or do the symptoms sound like something else is wrong?

Thank You Very Much

It is possible that some varnishing may have occurred from being laid up for the couple of years, try decarbing and see if that helps.
