1975 70hp johnson going into gear

my problem is the engine will crank and run fine but when you go to put it in gear the engine dies. when you put it in gear out of water it goes in just fine, forward and reverse.i tried idling it up and it still dies. im afraid to go any further on idle speed because it might damage something.any help will be greatly appeciated.

i checked the compression and its good and i also checked the spark and its getting good spark. it only dies when its going into gear in the water other than that it runs great.
