Jeff,

that leaves the coils. They were cracked up so I know they had to be leaking some voltage.

If you have a 70's motor and your coils are cracked up I say replace them. Also check those ground wires. I ran all new grounds a few years back because mine were looking bad. These motors are now 30+ yrs old. Long time for wiring and electronics that sit outside and get exposed to salt water like mine.

That will do it, cracked coils can also be internally shorted, spiking the powerpack. Any cracks at all, I toss em.

I just had a similair problem on a 79 115. Burnt 2 power packs, lost spark on 1 cylinder, burned up my stator all because my RECTIFIER was shorted to ground. I would say it was in the fact the rectifier shorted to ground, anyways glad you fixed yours and I fixed mine. Hopefully this post will help others with this similiar problem.
