Remove all the plugs and ground them. Top plug is #1 with firing order 1,2,3. Turn the ignition switch to "run" position and advance the throttle control to wide open throttle in gear. For safety you will have already removed the prop.

NOW: With the throttle fully advanced slowly turn the flywheel by hand until you see the top plug spark. Compare the 36 degree mark on the flywheel to the 0 on the block pointer. It should be 4 small lines to the left of the long line on the block pointer. (when looking from the front of the engine) This will be 32 degrees BTDC.

To adjust Loosen the locknut on the threaded rod connecting the two plastic blocks on the distributor.Widening the gap between blocks will retard the timing and closing the gap will advance. EDIT: Whoops! It is the other way. Widening advances timing.

This is static timing and on this engine will not change when running. You do not need a timing light unless you do want to check with the engine running.

Do not worry about timing at idle as it will vary a bit from engine to engine. The only important number is advance at WOT

Re: 1975 75h chyrsler outboard timing

Well I try to time the motor but I couldn't get spark while turning the motor over. It would get spark if I grounded the white/black wire when it was wot at 32deg so I figure that the sensor was bad and replace that. If have to take the distributor part to replace this cuz the rotor is glued on the shaft. after replacement of part I had all kinds of spark. So lesson learned is that even when you put a meter on the distributor to check the sensor, its suppose to go from 12v to nothing as you turn the motor over by hand. which it did. Well this doesn't work. there is no good why to check the sensor
