I am new to the forum. I have a 1974 75hp Chrysler Outboard. New battery and ignition. problem show up after installing the new battery. The outboard will not crank fast enough to start the engine. After it sits for an hour or so the crank speed is there. But if it doesn't start I loose the speed.

Do a compression test.
Then rebuild the starter.
Check all the connections.
Check the power cable for bumps and weak spots.

Not a lot of information to go on. Is the battery adequately sized to crank the engine?

Thanks jerryjerry05 I'll check all and get back with results. And Frank Acompora I'll have to check the battery size. It did cost 300+ bucks which shocked me,

Update: The engine is now turning very fast now. Enough to start the engine and more. The forward red wire at the bottom of the starter was loose. Now it wants to start it acts as though its not enough spark. I say that because as I was squeezing the gas bulb gas was coming out of the top carb hole.

The gas out the carb is a stuck float, or dirty carb.
Do a compression and spark test before you go any further.

Checked the compress on all 3 cylinders. Top=151, mid= 126 and bottom=147. Also did a spark test and positive for all three. found the problem; there is a push/pull switch by the throttle. I can't remember now but in is neutral and I had it pull out. the engine runs perfect with the ears on but I don't see a gush of water coming out of the mid drain. There is water but not a lot.
