Go back to your manual, Chris. Adjust the linkage.

Good luck. :)

Chris....did you by chance turn the shift rod out or in or when reassembling, as JB suggested, you didn't get the notch in the upper shift rod all the way into the shift rod connector? If it was OK before you dropped the lower unit, has to be something you did during reassembly.

should i pull the rod on the upper uuit all the way down and the lower unit all the way up and connect them? they dont leave much room to manuver in there, its quite frustrating.

Shift the upper rod into forward and lower rod into reverse. This should aford ample space to make the connection. Then just work the lower unit on. Take your time.....get your bolts and wrenches/sockets in arms reach. Take the hood off so you can turn the flywheel a little to align the drive shaft splines....then drop the lower unit a little so the shfit rod can be connected.

nake sure the 2 parts of the shiftrod are as close together as humanly possible before you tighten the clamp. if I remember right you have to take the clamp bolts all the way out to get the rods all teh way in

Actually, there is only one spot for the shift rods can be to be properly aligned and that's with the notches aligned in their respective holes. I once got a motor real cheap from a guy who swore the lower unit was shot - turned out the coupling had been tightened with the bottom rod not far enough into it - just the top nub was clamped into it. The bolt goes through the coupling and notch, making it somewhat fail safe.

- Scott
