Re: 1975 Chrysler 459he 45 hp running issue

Seals should be reasonable to do. Attachments are at the address below (not far down) showing my challenge and success. I tried to spot Frank?s tip on pulling the Etc after the two bolts were removed. I?m almost sure it was not with a puller. Maybe, just lightly worked off, since the O-ring seal is the drag/resistance (once the bolts are removed). Getting it started after bolted for years might gave been the issue but it came off and I replaced an O-ring and seal to solve the leak.

The search is a powerful tool for past info but a little time consuming and saving. Good Luck, I?m Out of Time But Will Check Back!!

Thanks a bunch...The reference points are a great idea. I ordered the seals today. I was relieved when i found it shifts fine...Just some adjusting...since I would have to do it all over again after replacing seals I am waiting. Good news is motor fires up and purrs. Won't be long hopefully.

Jimbass55, I found the tips from Frank on pulling/replacing the L/U seals at the address below. I have a Clymer Manual but the manuals IMO miss so many small tips that seasoned mechanics will include from there years of ?Hands-On-Experiences?. I guess I missed these good tips when I glanced in the manual.

Are you testing off the water with Muffs or a good deep barrel? Have Fun And Get On Those Fish Soon And Where!

Jimbass55, My experience has been starting/idle matters testing in a deep can/barrel works good. You might have noticed my deep blue barrel that has a drain for watering the yard with a hose when I finish. Two inches too high while storing on stand to try and save tires it w/n pump water.

The Ramp has been my best for power testing. The larger volume of water made a big difference on how well it?s tuned to come out the hole w/o bogging. Testing holding a Wide Open Throttle ?WOT?, usually takes a good WOT circle w/o the trailer leaving the ramp (if no boats are waiting). This has worked well at the start of seasons vs driving 75-100 mi to fish to discover I need some tuning.

Have you noticed the advantage of the Tell Tale allowing you to see cooling water at a glance out the side vs back of motor (attached pic and inst/tips posted at the top post FAQ). Plumbed to the bottom later was a lesson learned after seeing no water related to removing/adding cover.

Let me know if I?m sharing too much. I love my 1970 35 HP Chrysler (with a 55 cover), ?Probably?, the same as your 45 HP basically (35-55HP in one series). Post a pic (flywheel to L/U) of your complete motor carb side with the cover off will tell.

Were you able to download the manual in my other post? It's the dealer repair manual not a clymer.... It will have all the info you'll ever need for rebuilding and repairs.

rickryder, Is there a cost to the download or any negatives as joining Etc? I would like to compare some of the info with Clymer?s. Except I have been exhausted over the years with some of the catches from free Etc. and downloads. Thanks!

ok...I am officially frustrated...forward and reverse work fine with shift cable detatched...but when I attach I can get one or the other adjusting shift rod linkage. seems the shift cable just doesnt push or pull that extra 1/8th of an inch needed.

Re: 1975 Chrysler 459he 45 hp running issue

I know the frustration and feel some good tips will be coming. My input will be as follows:

1. Linkage adjustment worked before your recent work, Correct, It should work now with fine adjustment.
2. My suggestion is to see if you can get these gears with the control cable not connected at eng.
3. If you can get the gears, I feel it goes back to centering the linkage coupler as starting both centered.
4. This gets frustrating but has worked out. I have pics of motor link pics if you feel they will help.
5. I know that it feels that one thread out is a problem and it could be but it will workout adjusted.

Hang in there and let me know if I can help during this Bad Weather Slowdown

Re: 1975 Chrysler 459he 45 hp running issue

thanks...wickware, you are in ftw right? I just bought 2 Chrysler 45hp for $200. I used the hooked up the shifting cables from one of them on my current motor and it looks like it moves the upper shift arm further...I bet this solves the problems (hopefully, but won't know til tomorrow). I think the ones I currently have are aftermarket cables and the would probably work but aren't quite right.

If you have a factory (Chrysler) made remote control check at the remote. The levers that cables are conneted to has two holes in each.
For the shiftcable: connector should be in the left and the locknut should be to the right of connector.
Adjust so the threads from cable extends 1/2 inch beyond (right of) connector.
Maybe you have to adjust a little bit more but this information are from Chrysler factory made installation instruction OB1609 remote control model 72H36 and 72H37.

At engine the connector with no spring preload is for the shift and you should adjust it so you can slip it over the ballstud with no force in the cable.

This adjustment should be done with the cables disconnected.
At shiftlever on engine set the lever in neutral (the leverhook, if it has one, should be horisontal so it grab the timingtower).
Turn the prop and you should not feel the clutchdog engaging the gears.
Push the lever sligtly to forward and at the same time rocking the prop cw/ccw until you feel the clutch engaging.
Mark the lever position at timingtower. Do the same thing pushing lever to revers. Mark position when feeling engaging.
The distance between forward/neutral and revers/neutral should be equal, if not adjust at shiftrod intermidate.
Turn nut in 1/8 turns and check. The threads at lower shiftrod has a high pitch.

I know this can be tricky but hope it will help.

Re: 1975 Chrysler 459he 45 hp running issue

With your switch, I feel something is not as it was adjusted. From Norton?s detail info, there is some room for adjustments at places. I have experienced limited adjustments but some at the tower and cable clamp at the motor related to the neutral switch. The attachments might show limited adjustments. My two handle control box has little to no adjustments. Synchronizing the shift rod, eng towers, neutral switch and control box is the challenge.

I have seen a pic of the ctrl box with one handles vs two I have (both attached). Attached will be too many cln and dirty Pics in two threads due to the # of attachments. It appears that one of the dirty Pics should be marked forward vs reverse.

Good Luck!

A remote control with two handles is much more easy to adjust because there are no sync between the shiftcable and the throttlecable.

With a one handle remote you must be sure that the shiftcable has reach full stroke before the throttlecable starts to move.

With a two handle remote I do not think the throttlecable need a springpreload connector. The springpreload connector give the shiftcable time to make the full stroke.

well...i never could get the linkage right...but i went a different direction....one of the second motors i bought had better compression and just looked in overall better condition. I put my rebuilt carb, fuel pump, plugs, starter, solenoid, water pump, impeller, on it. It is running like a champ in the barrel, and I will lake test it soon. Thanks for all the help. I have had a blast and learned a ton.
