I am in the process of removing my gearcase from my 115 hp
Problem I am having is that when I shift into reverse and then back to neutral, the gearcase is still engaged in reverse, I have to put it in forward and back to neutral to disengage reverse. The oil from the gearcase is clear of any water or metal shavings.
Any idea what to look for before I tear it open
Any help would be appreciated

Check your shift linkage on the motor and in the control box for something being loose before removing the lower unit.

Yes something is out of adjustment I would remove shift cable under the hood with controls in neutral then move shift rod back and forth returning to neutral then see if it lines up with cable position if not adjust the threaded adjustment at the front where cable comes in. You can check neutral at any point by turning the prop.
