Okay so this is only my second rebuild (first was on a 6hp mercury) and I've run into a couple small issues. I bought this motor from a man who used it trolling for crabs on the bay until he became disabled and its been sitting ever since. I brought it back to my shop, and after a cleaning, I got her to fire up, even though she stalled shortly after.. (better than I expected since I hadn't even done work yet)..
cleaned carb, replaced water pump housing, replaced spark plugs, replaced fuel lines, changed the gearcase oil... all these things NEEDED replacing. Compression is good, both cylinders are around 110. My problem really has nothing to do with this.. just giving the 'history' .. so right now the powerhead seems to be in good running shape.
FIRST ISSUE
When I started the motor with the tiller handle in nuetral, the motor ran in forward.. it would not shift out of forward. I believe I must've messed up when reinstalling the gearcase, but after fiddling with it for a couple hours, I could not figure it out (and I even have the service manual) and with all my 'playing' I broke a plastic piece that locks into the prop assembly.. so now I hafta replace that. Does anyone have experience with the motors? Can you give me steps to how you link up the shift shaft?
SECOND ISSUE
This one is kinda interesting.. so if I pull the flywheel 5 times, at least one or two of those 'pulls', the motor will loudly 'pop' and I can see sparks shoot out of the exhaust housing. I was going to take a video, but I was afraid of all the youtube bashing I'd get for cranking my motor out of water to show sparks flying. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
