I had it hooked up to a 6 gallon external tank and pumped the bulb until it got hard and then I pushed the key in a few times to cake it and then held it in while I tried to start it. What is the correct starting procedure for these engines?

Re: 1975 Johnson 135 any good?

Well I got the boat and motor. The compression was 155-160 on all 4. I got it home and it started up pretty good on the muffs the first time but after I let it sit it did not want to start so I ran the high idle up and it finally started but was smoking really bad but picked up rpms eventually and stopped smoking as bad and went back to normal and did this the next time I started it too. The owner said he had only taken it out 3 times in the last 2 years but started it in the yard on muffs every now and then. He said the carbs were rebuilt earlier this year. What does it sound like the problem could be as far as the smoking bad and then jumping rpms back to normal?

might be old stale gas in it, I would drain it all and use it for the lawn mower. it will smoke but run fine in it.

start with fresh new gas and you know what you have.

on our old 90hp rude it smoked a lot at first start up but after that not much, but usually the first start up at the launch and you were always in a cloud of white smoke.

it all depends on the boat its mounted on but I will caution with these motors they have a habit of the power head sitting low to the water when its just floating so if you will be standing at or on the transom fishing you should raise the motor slightly because the bottom two plugs are close to touching water if someone stands over the motor (like on our fantail 21') and this could cause the porcelain on the plug to crack and misfire.

Thanks for the caution on that. It is on a center console bay boat that sits rather shallow in the water but I will be sure to watch that when I take it out

image.jpgIs there suppose to be a rod right there to set the trim? My old mercury 402 looks like that and I think there might suppose to be one right there. Am I correct?

If you mean the hole(s) in the bracket. And you want to limit negative trim? Then yes there should be a rod there. However if'n the trim is working properly it's not necessary.

Ya that was a weird old trim unit. Compared to today at least. But when they worked they worked. If it ain't totally effed up it might be worth a rebuild. Heck I solved my last trim leak with a 50 cent O-ring from Babe's Hdwe?

The trim is not even hooked up. The wires are just loose coming from the motor part and the ones from the console are not connected either

Hmm. That might have something to do with it not working ...?

There were 3 wires coming from it. A blue a red and I think a black but ill have to make sure its black later because its pouring down rain right now and what is the way they need to be hooked up?

This would be the tilt trim that you have if it's the tilt trim model. One cylinder is tilt the other is trim as I recall.

They sell for about $400 on ebay when they pop up.

Thats the one I have. I'm not sure what's wrong with it and don't really know how to start checking it. I can lift it by hand fairly easily

As long as the wires are loose any way try jumping 12 volts to the motor, the wires are usually blue for up positive, green for down positive and black for the negative lead. If yours is red that is likely the positive down.

I will try to do that tomorrow. It has been raining all day here today but I should get a chance tomorrow to try that. Thanks
