I don't really want to tackle setting timing or points alone, but this is an old engine and with some adjusting of the carbs (Low idle needle) on the water, the adjustments result in great performance until I come to idle again, then she/he sputters and quits.
I think the vibration may be turning my screws. When I removed the needles completely (the long low speed idle adjustment needles the packing just crumbled and fell out.
Does it sound like a timing problem?...or would you recomend a carb rebuild (do kits contain this packing---the photos I see of kits its hard to identify this packing) would some sealing tape hold the screws more secure?
Sorry for so many questions, but I'm both cheap and poor, otherwise I'd just buy new stuff. I'd like to fish rather than work on the motor though. :)

I recommend that you email a copy of your thread here to Bill Kelly at mtech@mastertechmarine.com.
He will get you the OMC/BRP kit that you need and whatever extra, if you ask him. Great guy!

If you have it, send along the model number and serial number
