If you have a shop near by that rebuilds car starters and alternators I'd take it to them. Would be cheaper than buying another one. Also shouldn't run it with the plugs loose. It's not safe and can damage the engine.

Spray a bit of WD40 on the shaft. If it spins freely after that then use a small bit of light oil like sewing machine oil. Probably just has old grease and dirt on it. Usually works and it is cheaper than rebuilding itif you don't have to.

Many thanks internals well worn and baseplate that holds brushes shot to bits new parts should arrive soon putting gearbox back on today I'm a little confused regarding gear shift height now are these measurements taken from the top of the gearshift housing or the Base I Can only seam to get the 20# from the top of gearshift housing but seams to be knocking it into gear on the way up to top linkage any ideas where I'm going wrong thanks

Long shaft, shift rod should be 20 29/32" to center of hole + - 1/32", the offset should be towards the rear. Not understanding why you are knocking it into gear.

Many thank.s bonz i can understand the 20# part but don't understand these other numbers 29/32 +1/32 when I try putting gearbox back on i think the offset top is pushing down on gearshift and knocking it into gear i will try again with offset facing the back of the boat thank.s for all your patience as this is my first bigger engine cheers hope these pics help. ...

Yes you need to measure from where you have the ruler in the 2nd picture.

The length from the face of the lower unit to the center of the hole is 20 and 29/32 inches plus or minus 1/32". So the longest you want to be is 20 and 15/16" and the shortest would be 20 and 7/8".

The shift rod is most likely hitting the rubber grommet as it's passing thru the lower shroud.

Shouldn't be able to shift it with the warm-up lever raised. Not idling I would guess you either still have a dirty carb, idle screw needs adjustment or weak spark on one cyl.
