Re: 1976 Evinrude 6hp - Spark Question

So I got home from work and it's been bugging me so I quickly pulled it apart and checked that the highspeed jet wasn't plugged.
No Orifice Plug here. I was mistaken. it's just a drain bowl screw and washer. I ran carb cleaner through it and it was not plugged at all. I also ran a guitar string through it and it came through easily. I put it all together and was going to test it and discovered that my test tank is frozen ;-(

I have attached 4 pictures. The first one I have 2 questions.
1) What is the yellow orifice that I pointed to ?
2) I believe the boss gasket is in the right place.

Please have a look and let me know if I have it right.
I also noticed on hole on the top (arrow pointing) that has no cover. When I blew on it there was nothing going through but I think there isn't supposed to be.

The wee orifice is part of the low speed fuel circuit.---After the fuel comes through the high speed jet seen in picture #2 it goes through that orifice before it goes to the low speed mixture needle.-----Please note , I can see the high speed orifice plug in picture #2

I believe the drain bowl screw and washer you mention is the drain plug (and washer), neither of which is pictured. The little brass fitting that is visible in the carb body (pic 2) is the high speed jet, and I think that is what you cleaned, right? (I'm assuming that pic 2 shows the lower front of the carb, but maybe that's not the perspective(?)). The best approach to cleaning would be to remove it and soak it, but you may be OK. The boss gasket looks OK. Note in pic 3 the large silver colored disc -- that is the plug I was describing (technically called an expansion plug) that provides access to the low speed passages underneath. You pry that off, and will likely destroy it in doing so (I usually drill it and pop it out with a small screwdriver, nail, screw or something similar.) If the low speed needle was seated, you would see the tip of it under the plug. There is a needle and seat under the arm of the float (last pic), and that would be removed (incl the seat) when cleaning.

oops. meant to say that what you are calling the drain plug (not pictured) is probably the high speed plug.

It's probably worth saying as well that there can be some debris up where the low speed needle goes (old packing and whatever), and you can get at that without any more disassembly. Use a flashlight to see if everything in there is clear, and try cleaning it up with a small screwdriver if something is in there -- but there is always risk of pushing stuff into the chamber under the expansion plug (incl to a lesser extent spray cleaning with carb cleaner). And be very careful of the seat and opening where the needle goes. Don't damage or scratch that. Not the preferred cleaning, but quicker if the ice melts and you want to try it out again.

There is a drain plug, it does 2 things.--You can drain the bowl if you take it out.------With the drain plug out you can now take the high speed jet out.----The highspeed jet is also called an " orifice plug " in the manuals.--A special screwdriver is called for to take that jet out or most of the time a screwdriver with a 3/16" diameter shank will take it out.

I'm guessing from what I see here that it is recommended to remove the HS Jet ?
If you've soaked it, blown it out, run carb cleaner through it and run a wire through it, is it still necessary to pull it out ?

It has been said before.----------Most apparent " carburetion problems " turn out to be something else.

So is it absolutely necessary to remove the HS jet to clean it ?
I'm willing to buy the tool and do it but wanted to confirm.

Not required unless you needed to change the jet for some reason. Just clean/blow it out.

Test the spark. If spark is weak or firing remains inconsistent, go from there with ignition repair. I think you need at least one dependable system before you can troubleshoot further.

How low of an idle are we talking? Will it run good off idle? Idle jet is behind the low speed mixture screw.I would give it a good run out on the water with some sea foam in the gas.
