I?ve had a 1976 Evinrude Fisherman 6604R with extended shaft for 15 years which I use on my sailboat to get to and from the docks. Rarely run for more than ten minutes at a time. The only maintenance I've performed is replacing plugs. Never had trouble starting and always ran good until last month.
The motor started as usual, motored out to lake, set sails and tilted motor forward to get prop out of water as I always do. After about three hours of sailing, placed motor back in water it started/ran fine for about two minutes and just died. It then would not start It takes forever to sail back to docks because of headwinds and narrow channel. Came back next day and still would not start. Replaced plugs, fuel pump, cleaned carb, installed new carb parts (not float), and replaced gas.
The next time I used the motor, it started fine and ran better than ever. Sailed about three hours and the motor again would not start. I came back next morning and motor started on second pull. Went sailing again and motor would not start after about two hours when I needed it to return back to the dock, just as before. Motor started just fine the next day.
I only have about half my pull cord left, but it has been like this since I had the motor and always started on second pull. Could this be the problem? Is tilting my engine up causing problems? I also noticed the squeeze bulb does not feel right when I try to restart after sailing. I?m mystified because the engine starts just fine the next morning.
