I have a 1976 Johnson sea horse 25RL76E I have installed the ignition kit including the generator coil and ignition coils plugs are j4c and gapped at 0.30 I have set the points to 0.20 When I idle down to almost the lowest point possible it back fires and kills I have adjusted the lean rich needle valve and I'm still getting quite a bit of smoke at mid throttle.

It was running very rich. I have installed the carburetor kit and at low idle I don't get any smoke. I am unable to reach the lowest idle setting with out the motor killing. Any ideas on this? is there an idle adjustment screw? Thank you!

Also I forgot to mention I have a new flywheel coming. when I replaced the Gen. coil it was out of place and I fear I may have damaged the magnets, could tis be the cause backfire or killing at low idle?

What was your procedure for adjusting the low speed mixture screw? Too lean will give you a "lean sneeze" and stall the engine. Make sure the carb is synched to the ignition cam. Also it is best to set the points with a meter or buzz box and the timing marks rather than just setting the gap for best idle quality. There is an idle stop screw that you can adjust, but don't do that until it is running properly.

I made small adjustments and waited as the engine ran for the low speed screw , Good to know about the Lean sneeze , never heard of a buzz box , the idle stop screw is located on the rear carb linkage I take it? Can you tell me the procedure to sync the carb to the ignition cam? Thanks

There is a mark on the cam, the carb roller should just touch the cam at that mark. The carb should not be open at all at low speed, the idle speed is controlled by the timing position.
