Swanky rims. The whole thing looks great. That walking plank will be handy.
You may want to wait on the floor so it's lighter for the flippin.

Actually those r cheapo walmart hubcaps .. ;) Whats the walking plank?

Ya I will most likely wait then to to do the floor ....but I will dry fit it to make sure all is well.

I have a quick question.... I noticed that the trailer which was painted in rusto...seems to scratch easily when dinged with a tool or anything... why does this happen... and would this happen to the boat when I apply rusto? Is this why you add hardner to the paint? (which I didnt add to the trailer paint job :()

Because Rusto takes a LONG LONG time to completely cure. Hardener will probably help.

Re: 1976 Starcraft 16' SS (Restoration)

Well I finally got back to workin on the SS. Removed all the old floor rivets and old rivets with my handy new air grinder (was only $20 with a few extra blades) :D

3-1.jpg

I also removed all the old hull stickers ... and SC logo. I will get some new ones after paint. Im not sure if this bothered anyone else. But I spent like 5 hours 1/2 box of steel wool and about 2 elbows removing all of the overspray on the aluminum around the top of the gunwales (and I still have to do the inside of the outer trim piece). It looks much better with a clean edge. I think some of it was from the PO overspray... but some actually looks like the original blue? I guess at some point when the SC was painted they didnt mask too well.... I think I did read in someone elses resto thread that they noticed the same thing. Heres a before and after pic.

Hopefully our camera will be in stock soon we got a rain check for a 14.1mp kodak I think with 720 video(res) for only $59  was a good deal so its worth the wait. The I can leave the phone usage for calls.... and leave the camera off :D

Not much accomplished today.. it was a rainy day again.... o well. I did rivet in 2 extra supports for the stringers to make them more sturdy. One for bow area and one for near the stern area. I plan on creating something from the stern piece the the floor in order to keep me from losing my noodles :p:D.

I plan on filling some water in forst and marking the leaks and applying gluvit. Then flipping the boat

Im still in a quandry...when at the point I want to flip the hull for sanding and painting is it possible to flip the hull by myself? pulleys on a tree and furniture dollies?

Quick question guys. I have sanded the starboard side and plan on sanding the port side in an hour.

sanded1.jpg

My question is this I remember reading about vinegar and water... I believe a 50/50 mix to wipe down the sanded area correct? before priming or painting or either/both? One other question... after reading I read about using "self-etching primer". I bought some of the rusto rattle cans to spot prime. I assume this primer would work good?

rustoetchingprimer.jpg

I tried a test spot... I wish it wasnt so dark... its gonna be harder to cover with the white :(

selfetchingprimer.jpg

One last and final question... since I am sanding and feathering the edges to bare aluminum for a cleaner paint job. The paint left on the boat is in sound and clean condition (I am sanding this too). Do I need to prime the whole boat? Can I just sand.... etch (spot prime) bare alum and 2 (top) coats with no primer?

Yup, vinegar and water wash - don't touch it after the wash. Then etch, prime, paint. I don't have experience with that etching primer but I know that guys have had success with it.

Have fun:):)

I'd recommend priming the whole boat. EZ had bad luck painting the old stuff with no primer.

I have not gotten to that point yet myself, almost though.:)

I have some over spray on my aluminum trim too, and it looks like original yellow. Sloppy work on some of the late 70s paint jobs.

Re: 1976 Starcraft 16' SS (Restoration)

I assume the plain ole rusto grey primer would work just fine over the etching primer? Both sides first sanding done. I plan on a quick sanding with a 220 before primer... then like a 400 after primer. My arms feel like I tried to pick up an elephant .... twice :D

O and by the way... I fig I might as well update: the captain said she wouldnt ride in an orange boat.
Guess she sits on shore eh! The first mate also said no orange he really wanted blue (his original color choice anyway).... So I guess orange is out. Its either back to the drawing board or might be looking at blue.

I know.. I know.. another blue SC SS. :p:p:rolleyes::D:D (Actually I had always preferred blue or green anyway....)

As I was on my way to bed... it struck me. The color I want is TEAL. The capt will like it... the fist mate will like it and I will like it.... its a green-blue. I can rusto mix it with white/green/blue. whatcha think ..SWEET :D

teal.jpg

Better mix enough.. lol. I could imagine slapping myself on the forehead as I run out of teal saying. I knew it.. I KNEW IT...............knew it.
BTW......that was a hard decision for an indecisive person. :D

That etching primer should be fine. You only need a light dusting of it. It's not supposed to really cover/hide anything. I would then prime the whole boat with Rusto Clean Metal Primer. Teal will be great!

I flipped mine onto furniture dollies and they were SO handy for moving the hull around the garage. http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/DSCF2266.jpg For flipping it, I really recommend just having 2-3 friends come over the help you flip it. It will only take a couple minutes and then you don't have to engineer anything.

Well I got a few things accomplished today. The weatherman said 2 words that allowed to me put on gluvit "sun" and "shine" :D

And away we go: (any Jackie Gleason fans out there?)

Finished the gluvit:

Also got the transom built.... I cant believe that the lumber companies rip you off by a 1/32 on ply now..so its makes my transom like 1/16 too thin. I think the 2 coats of epoxy will make up for that though. I did sandwich them together with Liquid Nails and screws. If I could do it all over again. I would have sandwiched them together first then cut-out the transom. It would make for a cleaner cut... instead of sanding the uneven edges :(... O well.either way ... here it is :D

Re: 1976 Starcraft 16' SS (Restoration)

Hey guys quick question... I was wondering, I went to Ace Hardware yesterday for sanding disks and saw thier version of Rusto.... it was called Ace Rust Stop. The worker there told me it could be tinted. It seems almost identical to Rusto (enamel). Because no one really tints rusto.... would the tintable base and tint be acceptable? Has anyone tried this paint?

Aaaaaactualy...

I just saw a giant poster at Menards showing all the colors they can tint Rustoleum. I don't recall seeing teal on it but then again I wasn't really looking either.

Sorry to duck your question! I dunno on the ACE stuff though.

Cheers!

I used the Rust Stop on my 12' AeroCraft trailer a few weeks ago and it seems pretty durable.

I was thinking the same thing as far as it being very similar to Rustoleum, and didn't feel like driving to more than one store that day.

Check out my last few posts in that thread to see some photos. I used a medium gloss grey and I am pretty happy with it. Not sure if it's as good as Rusto but so far, so good.:)
