Re: 1976 Starcraft Supersport 16'

I think the motor is mounted too high on the Ford. :)

I recognize that mess in the control box. You need a part no. for the neutral pin and leaf springs? I don't know if I can find the nylon/plastic bushings P/Ns. While you have it apart, how is the warm-up lever lock pin? It keeps the warm-up lever down when working the gear change/throttle.

I found the bushings at Mercs and More, picked them up on Saturday. Rode over on the motocycle between rain storms, and somehow stayed dry. Lots of heavy rain and flooding here in Denver/Boulder area. I live on the SW side of town and the entire North side has had "biblical" amounts of rain.

I missed posting a link to the remote parts diagram. Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. - REMOTE CONTROL ASSEMBLY (ELECTRIC) - 115 HORSEPOWER

Ignore the title, the remotes are the same.

We found out yesteday that the ignition switch needs to be replaced, so I have to find one of those now... everything else seems to be in pretty darn good shape considering its age.

Hey guys,

I have really learned a lot from this thread and finally got my new (old, beaten, battered) boat. Here is the new resto thread. http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...1976-starcraft-supersport-rebuild-627872.html

Wow, thats a great looking boat. The condition reminds me greatly of when I got mine. You will find that the jobs you have to do aren't as tough as you think, and I've found it pretty rewarding. Congrats on the new boat, I'll be following along :)

Re: 1976 Starcraft Supersport 16'

Prop pitch question. 1st of all I am not really concerned about hole-shot or top speed. I am hoping to balance both and have the motor be under as little stress as possible (not over revving or bogging it down). I am also assuming the boat will generally have a decent amount of weight on average for typical use.

I have a prop on the motor now that needs to be balanced or resurfaced (not sure of the correct term), but it is in decent shape. I also have a brand new prop that was given to me with the boat. I believe they are both aluminium (painted black) not stainless. I'm going to take a look at them tonight and I'll update with the current pitch and diameter of what I have.

From what I am understanding the higher the pitch the higher the horsepower required to spin it, which is also true about the diameter. But having never driven the boat I don't know if what is on there is too big or too small. The article I was just reading said that for every additional inch of pitch, the rpm's are reduced by 200 revolutions.

I guess I didn't really ask the question yet but, What size pitch and diameter props are you other 16' aluminum boat guys using and how do you like the characteristics of hole shot and top speed?

My 16 ss had an 850 merc on it when I bought it, unfortunately the powerhead was toast so I never got to run it but it had a 21p prop on it. I replaced it with a 70 evinrude and have found that a 17p prop is perfect, 5400 rpm wot at 33mph. Sorry I can't give you numbers for the merc but I assume the 21p was working.

I just checked and the prop is labeled 48-77344-17 and my second prop is labeled 48-37902A3-17P I assume the diameter is 48 and pitch is 17. Do you think this will be too little pitch? I have two of them that came with the boat so I assume the PO must have liked the characteristics of it... sounds like I could go larger if I want the extra speed down the road.

I have a much better understanding of props now. 48 means Mercury, and 17 is the pitch. The other number is just a part number. The second prop is an SS prop, does that stand for stainless steal? Sorry I thought it would be shiny instead of painted black?

Keep me posted on where you pick up your ign. switch....... TIA!

Yeah - SS would be stainless. I have seen painted SS props. Not often though, but it happens.

SMG I found one locally, but here is a non push to choke 5 terminal version I just found on ebay LINK Get it quick, says its the last one.

Its a pretty heavy prop, and I'm pretty sure its new. The fins are twice as thick as the other prop, I think when I service the lower unit I'll slap this one on and get the other resurfaced for a backup.

There must be a non-destructive way to tell AL from SS, but I don't know how. Magnets won't work. When some of the paint wears off, maybe then. :noidea:

Re: 1976 Starcraft Supersport 16'

Quick update. It was a busy weekend with the kids (soccer game on Saturday and a doubleheader baseball game yesterday) but I was able to get some work done inside the boat. I reassembled and installed the two side panels, and I cleaned out the boat. Doesn't look like much but it was good progress. I put the TnT wires inside of some conduit (just to clean things up). I also glued some vinyl to the left side dash panel, which required me to trim the dash to fit the beauty ring around it. I cleaned and took apart the steering mechanism so that I can install it in the right side dash. I am hoping that I can get the hole cut before I glue on the vinyl, just to make things cleaner. I only took a couple pics of the side panels, it looks as thought I could have pulled the vinyl tighter before I stapled it but it really doesn't look that bad.

Careful use of a heat gun may shrink those wrinkles out.

Great progress on a heavy weekend of kid activity...

I think vinyl tends to shrink some over time, so it might lay flatter.

Did you get the TnT bled and working, 850?

Thanks JB, I'll give the heat gun a try (carefully) and see if I can shrink it up. It was definitely a busy weekend around my house, but if I take the trouble to move the boat to the garage for the whole weekend I HAVE to make some sort of progress

I'm starting to wonder if I should have glued the vinyl on the side panels instead, but I thought it would be smarter to allow them to breath. As far as the TnT I think I am going to reroute the lines 1 more time before I bleed it. I found an old picture that shows the lines all coming in from under the rear of the pump. Right now two are from the rear and two are from the front, it just seemed like it was a more natural position for those rigid hoses. I think the area under the splash well will look a lot tidier if I route them in from the rear.

Friday is my 40th birthday, so I am going to take the day off of work and nerd out on the boat ALL day.

Nice - The big 4.0.

I must be an official boat nerd, because that sounds like a great way to spend your birthday.

Boat is coming along nicely! The vinyl will work itself over time and it looks good right now anyway.

Re: 1976 Starcraft Supersport 16'

Happy late birthday GA, I had a nice time yesterday working on the boat. We were able to get both dash panels completed and mounted on the boat. I used stainless bolts and nuts, so I can remove them in the future for various reasons. On Thursday night I was able to cut the hole for the steering wheel and then glude the vinyl to the panel. Yesterday we stapled the excess vinyl, punched the hole (through the vinyl for the TnT and steering, and then reinstalled the aluminum trim piece around the outside. I am also finished putting the TnT wires into wire loom. Here are a few pics of the dsh

This weekend I am going to also get the control box mounted and the wiring and cable ran to the splash well.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.
