First remove all connections from the starter and the battery. Sand connections bright clean. Take the battery to Sears or womewhere & get a load test. Put a light coat of grease on the surfaces of all connectors and reconnect. If that dosen't do it check the solonoid. Also clean the shaft that the bendix gear rides on & rotate by hand to make sure that it is free.

Starters do go bad but it is usually the other stuff. If your starter is bad take it to an electric motor repair place rather than buying a new one (big $$ for new).

tlflash: Can you manually move the bendix gear up the shaft to the flywheel? If you can, check that it spirals up the starter shaft.

Fair Skys, Smooth water

tlflash,

I just purchased a 1976 ranger bass boat and had a similar problem with my mortor starting. Have you replaced the starter solenoid?
