1977 21' starcraft aluminum outboard choice

This hull is a 1977 starcraft 21' aluminum hull. I have no idea what model of starcraft it is. it was originally a split console, but now is a center console. It is all aluminum. the original wood floor is now aluminum honeycomb, so it is considerably lighter than it was originally. I think it is probably under 1000 lbs. without the motor. I was sold a rebuilt 1989 evinrude 150 in 1999. I'm thinking the 150 is a bit too much motor for this boat, and I am in the market to repower with a newer motor. I am leaning towards an E-tec. I'm interested to know if anyone recognizes the starcraft model and to have some kind of consensus on what would be the best size and type of motor to put on this boat. Also just wanting to share my restoration of this boat.

A 150 will serve that hull just fine

I have a 21ft starcraft islander, that I revamped from an i/o to an outboard on a 29 inch setback bracket.
with a 150 (25 inch mid) spinning a 20p 4 blade, hull has lots of get up and go. easily pull a skier etc and run low 40's

I believe you have a 22' V-5 hull like mine. You have the extra strakes running up the bow and your transom is just like mine (which no-one here seems to have ever seen or thinks is normal) In order for it to be a V-5, which it is, it's a '78 or a '79. Those are the only years they made a 22' SS V-5. My boat has an an '85 Evinrude 140 (V-4) which is more than enough, but the boat is rated for 240hp. A lot of guys here would love your setup.

I agree that a 150 should be just about perfect for that boat. Sweet hull!

Nice rig, I like it as a CC.

Dave is on the money here, that's a V5 22' SS. One of the most well-built aluminum boats you will find.

Do you take it on the ocean? If so, dual outboards might be a consideration since you're buying

Aluminum boats are just so much lighter than their fiberglass counterparts. One of their selling points is using a smaller engine for improved range and fuel usage.

A 115 hp four stroke would be a great performing engine for this boat, and the cost would be $3,000 less than a 150 hp.

thanks for the advice. I use the boat mainly in saltwater (Mississippi Sound). I think dual outboards would weigh it down too much. Of course the original plaques with weight and engine specs is gone, but the HIN is still intact. The old 150 on it now is too much of a gas hog. I am more interested in fuel economy and achieving the lightest rig possible, and not that interested in top speed. Even in light chop, I have to keep my speed down. One of the shortcomings to a light boat: it can be a jarring ride slamming into waves.
