I cannot get my 1977 35hp Evinrude w/tiller to start. It has been sitting up for a couple of years now.
The first time it gave me trouble was when out in the lake it felt like it was losing power. I checked the fuel line bulb to see if it was firm. It had some pressure so I pumped it a time or two, then the motor died. Now I can't get it to start back up. I took the Carb off and cleaned it and checked it out, seemed OK. Tried to start it after that and it acts like it wants to start after a few pulls then on like the 3-4 pull I hear a loud pop and nothing else. Keep in mind this motor used to start on the 2-3 pulls.
Do you think I have some sort of fuel/Carb problem or could it be an ignition coil, points, condensor etc? Any feedback or troubleshooting tips would greatly be appreciated. Ready to get back to fishing!!!!

you got the best stuff to start with. when you did the carbs, did you remove clean the high and low speed jets. run a small wire thur them.

Re: 1977 35 hp Evinrude w/ starting trouble

I tried all of the tests to see if my motor would start, it has great spark and is getting plenty enough fuel. The problem is it will only start when I pour gas directly into the Carb. If I try and start it without pouring gas into the carb it just lets out little puffs of smoke but will not start. Any suggestions on this, should I rebuild my Carb or see about a new one? I have rebuilt Carbs on cars but never on an outboard. Thanks

Re: 1977 35 hp Evinrude w/ starting trouble

My 35 hp was so close to starting then the pull string broke and now I can't get it to engage with the flywheel to turn the engine over. I have no problem winding the string back in it just getting it to catch to turn the flywheel. This has turned out to be a snowball effect I have gotten so close and then run into something else.
Is there any secret or trick to reinstalling the pull string housing on the engine that I am simply missing.

thanks

Thanks for all of the quick responses and helpful links. I have only one more question. Since my pull string broke while pulling it should I replace the spring or take my chances with the old one.

Thanks for all the info!!!

When rebuilding my Carburetor how do you remove the old plugs that seal the passages on the Carb? They look almost like tiny freeze plugs.

Thanks
