Hey guys,

I recently used this motor and it appeared to be running fine. I was able to troll with this motor for about 1hr and then all of a sudden it sounded like it was starving for fuel. So I went to shut it off to switch gas tanks; but it would not shift from forward into neutral. So I just shut it off. Now I cannot get it back into neutral. If you manually shift the gears on the motor, it will now bypass the neutral gear and go straight into reverse and vise-versa from reverse to forward. Since I do not have a neutral gear, I cannot start the boat. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem??

I should also mention when I shift the gears manually, they are difficult to shift. Also the throttle cable seems tight as well and I have lost some of my rpm range.

Thanks in advance,

What does the throttle linkage look like as well as the cables. Have you pulled the lower unit and shifted it by hand. Is the lower unit half water and oil. Start from the the top and follow it all the way down to the clutch dog.

When you are shifting manually, do you have the control cable disconnected from the shift arm at the motor? If not, disconnect the cable and try it. Also, drain the lower unit fluid and see how it looks. Any sign of water?

Hello,

Thanks for the quick replies. I have not pulled the lower leg yet. I was hoping I did not have too. When it is in gear, I can manually turn the prop ~ forward and in reverse. With the hood off of the engine, I can see the things appear to be working properly. I have disconnected the control cable from the motor. At the throttle end of the cable near the steering wheel, everything is smooth and working great.

It is in your opinions, that I should next drain the leg?? (Sorry for the newbie questions !! This is my first real motor problem )

With the cable disconnected have you tried to shift the engine by hand? I think that is what the other posters are trying to get you to do first. If it works easily on the engine by hand then you have a cable problem. Checking the lower unit oil is a must as they said.
