I am looking at buying an older motor for my Jon boat since I don't want to thrash my newer one and found a '77 Evinrude 55HP model number 55773d. It is electric start with power tilt/trim for $450. Is this a solid motor? Is there any particular issues that I should look for in this model? Is that a reasonable price? Thanks for all the help.

Older is better as far as I am concerned, yes that is a good motor as long as it was taken care of and it isn't an electric shift, I think they were before that but not sure.

You will want to hear it run and check compression, should be 100+(90ish cold).

$450 for a 55 is really cheap which would make me want to hear it run even more, maybe the guy doesn't know what he has or something is wrong with it and he wants to dump it, just check it out really well before you buy.

If everything checks out that is a super deal.

What is the procedure to check compression? Do I check one cylinder at a time? Where can I pick up the tool to check compression? Thanks for the reply.....

For $450, I'd be expecting a pretty pristine motor. I'd want to run it on the water, under load, to make sure the motor runs with load on it (running on the muffs tells nothing, other than it will start). Running with load will also confirm the LU is OK. NADA shows $95 for that motor, which may be too low, but 30 year old motors are not like fine wine.

I would drain a little gear oil to see if any water comes out (it'll be on the bottom) and check the level to see its go enough oil.
