1977 Evinrude 70HP driveshaft oil retainer seals

I have a Evinrude 1977 70HP motor that had water in the gear oil. I've decided to replace all the seals.

My question is which way are the drive shaft oil retainer seals supposed to be pushed in. Each one has a round spring on the inside, should the spring be facing up or down?

One spring is on the oil side.------The outer one has the spring on the water side.

And that right there is probably why the top seal was worn out while the bottom looked good. Both were spring down. Gotta love others peoples work.

I put a small quantity of grease between " back to back " seals.
