My 1977 Evinrude tilt/trim motor seems to be really straining. I recently had my motor off the boat, and tried it then. It also seemed to be straining without the weight of the motor. I know it's pulling a lot of current - immediately blew out a 2A fuse (I had to wire around the fuse just to get it to run). My old tilt/trim worked well with the 2A fuse, so I assume this one should have done the same.
I took the top off of the motor, (exposing the brushes, rotor) and turned the rotor by hand. It turned free and even easily lifted/lowered the motor, so I don't think the pump assembly is bound up.
I did notice the inside of the motor is quite dirty, but looked very typical for 30 years of use. I removed, cleaned, and resoldered the contacts to the brushes while I had the top off. It made no difference.
The tilt/trim works, it's just that the motor seems to strain a lot, and that can't be all that great for the battery.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
