Re: 1977 johnson 85

When you run the motor the water must cover the water pump and be allowed to fill the pump before running. It's easier with muffs, but a barrel should work if you have the water deep enough.

There is an air bleed hole at the top of the metal waterpump liner that needs to be open to vent the air that the water is trying to displace.

I'm still not clear on whether you have the two water tubes inserted into the two holes in the waterpump housing.

There should be a plate on the port (left) transom bracket that has the model and serial number imprinted upon it. What is that model number?

The water pump draws its water from the water intake ports just below the pump. Take the pump off, remove the impeller plate and look down to be sure that the intake is clear on both sides. The screen needs to be in good condition.

Model number 85ETLR76D is a 1976 85hp Johnson exactly as you state. However, the 1976 85hp incorporates two (2) water tubes. If there is only one (1) water tube attached to the adapter plate (plate that the powerhead sits upon), something is vastly wrong.

Either the upper portion of that engine is a later model than a 1976 OR the water tube has broken off. If broken off the powerhead and adapter plate will require to be removed in order to install a new water tube. What you are attempting to do as listed above, using a single tube, is simply not going to work.

To BradWhitehead: The air bleed hole is a hole at the top of the metal liner in the 1977 85HP waterpump. It feeds to a vent that allows the air to be purged from the pump as it is displaced by incoming water.

Re: 1977 johnson 85

sorry been looking at this crap for so long that im starting to see stuff that wasnt written. If the damn UPS man hurrys up i might be able to get this dang thing done today. I dont see how a motor from 1977 can still be running perfect but any automobile from that year is pretty much scrap metal. Make car motors like boat motors and nobody will ever have to buy a new car because the damn thing broke down. And if your gonna build boat motors so well dont go changing the parts around so i have to order a water pump from deleware or buy each part individually from my dealer and have it get here and be wrong. Sorry ive been ranting but this project has done made me mad
