Welcome pappie, :p

Is the motor elec. start or rope?

What kind of spark, strong, blue, snappy or yellow & weak?

Has the motor been sitting for awhile? any recent maintenence history? can you do a compression test and post the results.

And yes the coil and power pack can be tested but depending on the answers to some of these questions that may not be needed yet.

Go to Engine FAQs. Troubleshoot BEFORE you replace anything.

Pappie....read the post in FAQ's as suggested by JB. Lot of good info there.

Spark....the spark should be able to jump at lease a 7/16" gap with a hot lighting like spark as MCM posted. If it doesn't, you have trouble with the ignition system. Also, a service manual will do wonders for your trouble shooting. Generics are OK for somethings, but for direct info on your particular engine, nothing bets a OEM service manual.

Generics are sold right here on iboats. OEM reprints can be had through Ken Cook Co., marine.com or the outboardwizard.

What type plugs are you using and what are they gapped at? when/why were they changed?

After cranking w/plugs in how do the look after being pulled? wet/dry, etc.?

Has the motor been working up to this or did it just happen?

Just trying to get a feel for the problem ;)

The motor has been working up to this hard to start then when started sometimes it would only run at half throttle when it was running. Then shut done it would take 50 or 60 pulls to start it last time I had it out. Now it won't start at all

I suspect the powerpack are there any indications how the powerpack might act before shutting down completely

Re: 1977 johnson 9.9 won't start

I suspect its probably in need of a good tune up.

Getting fuel to the carb doesn't mean the carb is processing the fuel, thats why I asked what the spark plug looked like and when was it changed last.

If the plug is wet after cranking several times, at least then you know your getting fuel to the cylinder, however that doesn't mean your getting the proper fuel/air mixture. Your carb may have fouled jets and passages, too much air not enough fuel, (time for a carb overhaul)

You say your getting spark. What kind of spark? a strong, blue, Snappy spark would just about rule out the need for a power pack.

On the other hand a weak, yellow spark could mean you just need a new plug, or it could be a coil, power pack, etc. does this make sense so far?

Basically a motor needs three things in order to run right. Good compression, Good spark and the proper fuel/air mix.

These articles have a lot of valuable info that would take way to long to go into in this forum, Check them out & post back ;)

http://www.pugetsoundanglers.org/Fishing Info/Johnson 9.9_15.htm
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000033;p=1#000000

Good Luck

Re: 1977 johnson 9.9 won't start

Thanks for all the help guys but my suspictions were right it was the powerpack. Before the powerpack went the engine was surging like it wasn't getting enough fuel. Then we couldn't get the engine started. After we checked the spark it seemed as though the spark wasn't very strong. The fuel pump was putting out so I ruled that out. This led me to believe the powerpack was bad.I took a chance and ordered a powerpack the worse that could have happened was a spare powerpack which you should have on hand anyway. Thanks again for all your input. PAPPIE she's purring like a kitten now.
