last season i rebuild mij 1990 v4 115hp evinrude and with some help of a mechanic who set the timing the motor is running great.

my neighbour down the street has a 78 v4 crossflow wich has the following compression readings.
115/105 and 80/80

so we pulled the heads and found that the starboard cylinders are bad news and need to be rebored and have new pistons.
the other side seems better and with honing and new rings it would be fine.

i dumped around 1500 in my motor last year and i told him that he should expect the same for him.

he was a little upset about it bud hey does this sound unreasaneble?

thanks reeldutch

sounds aboiiut right. but I would recomend boring all 4. I have had good luck with sierra pistons and bearings. however go back to OMC/BRG for the gaskets.

Very good advice.
But I would have told him to invest in some PBBlaster. It's like night & day compared to WD-40. If working on a salted up engine, you want the very best of weapons.
Tell him to pick up a cylinder of MAPP while he's getting the PB.

Got to agree with you Paul on the PBBlaster, it's some pretty good stuff for loosening rusted and corroded bolts and part. If you can find it, Kroil's very good too. Never heard of MAPP, what is it?

Gas that's hotter than LPG but cooler than oxy-acetelyne. I've used it on badly corroded bolts, pins etc in tearing down outboards and it's hot enough to do it. LPG isn't. MAPP comes in small handyman bottles so you don't have the same problem as oxy with rentals, bigger size etc. Big hardware stores usually have it.

I think it's probably also hot enough to melt alloy so I always put a shield around the bolt head if possible.

thanks for the advise.

i always use a regular propane torch and so far it worked very well for me.
the bolds on the exhaustcover always give the most problems but i got them out with torch and wd40.
what is pbblaster? does it eat the salt ?
keep u posted on the progress
