Low93..... Look at bottom portion of starboard transom bracket. There's a hole there. The screw slot in the manual release valve in within that hole. Do not turn it out more than two (2) turns.

If still no movement, put a rag over the reservoir fill hole as a makeshift seal. then apply 7 to 12 psi of air to the reservoir. THis will force the PTT fluid down into the area under the oil pump.

Joe- If I put the rag over the fill hole, where should I shoot in the air? I did notice when I manually lifted after filling I could hear a sort of gurgling sound. Also, some of the fluid that leaked out of the hole was a kind of milky color.

Down still works, but when I try and tilt up via the switch, I hear a click from the junction box, but still no movement up. I want to try the compressed air, but just want to make sure I am reading you correctly. Thanks for all your knowledge and help here!

The rag over the fill hole is not to clog the hole, it's simply to act as a makeshift seal to help keep the pressirized air from escaping. The air is to applied to the center of that rag (into the hole). The reservoir must be filled to overflowing when the engine is in the full up position.

Milky fluid indicate water mixed with it.

In the UP posiiton, when you activate the UP switch.... does the electric motor run? If not, you have another problem.

joe- I manually titled up and then powered down quite a few times, and unscrewed the fill screw then back again a few times in between, and presto- it now works.
thanks for the help! After reading through your advice, and studying the shop manual then playing with the system, I think I have a pretty decent grasp now. It's amazing what difference a little air/fluid can make!

I have the same motor in my pontoon that I just got. Funny thing is that it's having the same problem even down to the trim switch up button not working.
I jumped the up switch and can here the motor run just like the down.

The big question now is what kind of fluid do I use?

PTT fluid from your dealership, or automatic transmission fluid.

Thanks Joe.

Is there a big difference in what ATF I use.

What one would you recommend.

Or is ATF something I should only use in an emergency?

My down trim worked but my up didn't and it was from a bad relay in the control module mounted near the transom, replaced relay (used reg car relay that I sprayed with undercoating to make marine grade ha) and fixed....this was last year.

haven't ran my boat in a while, noticed the PTT fluid is leaking to the point that it gurgled on the way up and stopped 1/4 the way...problem is I need to life the motor to extend the cylinders and fill up with fluid but I can't. It's stuck beyond human manipulation...

Will forcing air into the oil fill reservoir fix the issue? When it gurgled I should have stopped but I kept pressing the button knowing that it needed to be fully lifted to refill...does air in my line mess up the cylinders?

Is the PTT fluid fill screw located on the starboard transom ALSO the manual relief valve or is that a different screw? The only other screw I could find is on the actual pump housing which is on the port side. I have the same setup as the one in the pictures on my 81' 90hp model johnson.

That relief screw is hiding out for sure, thankfully exploded views were available on the web...also Walmart has PTT fluid, it's cheaper than ATF and specifically designed.

If it weren't for this thread I couldn't have gone out and nearly maxed on white bass, even in the 105 degree Texas heat!
