Hi guys: new to this forum but looks like you guys have a lot of knowledable people here. I just bought a 1978 chrysler fin and fun boat that has a chrysler 140 on it just after i bought it i put in the water and ran it and it seemed to run ok accept that it was kinda hard to crank cold. it would drag a little. so i called the guy up that i bought it from and he told me that he had advanced the timing on it to get a little more power out of it. and that could be why its draging a little on start up. so i had a local mechanic come to my house with a timing light and put it back to what the book states its saposed to be. and i went out and got a new starter and 4 new plugs for it and while installing the plugs i discovered that the #4 cylinder had water come out of it when i removed the spark plug. so i went on the internet and ordered a new gasket set for this motor. and i am waiting on it as i write this. so i pulled the head off and found a small area aroud the #4 cylinder on the head that looked a little odd. so i removed the head gasket and in that area the head is a little pitted. but it didn't look bad at all. so i decided to pull the head off another chrysler 140 i got when i bought the boat. for parts : i pulled the head off the parts motor and looked at it and it looked great and the head gasket looked brand new. so i got me a torque wrench and put the head on the motor but while i was torqueing the bolts i discovered that a couple of the head bolts where stripped. my question is can this be fixed or did i just waste the money i just payed for this boat and motor. thank you .

Re: 1978 chrysler 140 tune up.

When the 5/16-18 bolts strip, they are the perfect size to re-tap to 3/8-16. You will need a starter tap and a bottom tap. If you have more than 3 or 4 stripped, you may as well do all the bolt holes at 3/8-16. You will also need to buy 18 grade 8 head bolts. Buy them at a Fastenal if there is one near you

Drill the head holes just a smidge over 3/8 (or 13/32) for clearance. The gasket holes will be enlarged by the bolts.

Although standard torque for 3/8-16 is around 280 inch pounds, the same torque as 5/16 bolts will do---225 inch pounds.
