I have found a 1978 Evinrude 85HP outboard motor on craigslist for $300. Is this a fair price? Is there anything in particular that I should look out for if I go to look at the motor?

Re: 1978 Evinrude 85HP Value

The price completely depends on the condition of the motor, and unfortunately we do not have enough info to make that call. If the motor is in good running order, then yes, that is a good price. If the compression is poor and the ignition, cooling and charging systems need an overhaul, then no, it is overpriced.

When buying a motor, I always first check compression. If the cylinders are not within spec, I usually walk away. After that, bring a large slotted screwdriver and let a small amount of the gear oil out. Is it milky white? If so, there is water intrusion. Does it run normal without overheating? Does it come with controls? Can you post the link for the ad?

FYI, In the early years of the crossflow V4 engines, OMC made two basic versions, the small bore block and the large bore block. The last year for these two blocks was 1978. The 85 hp model that year was a small bore 92 cubic inch block. In 1979, OMC standardized blocks, making all the 99.6 cubic inch versions. This difference separates these engines from their larger brothers. Despite the difference, I wouldn't have any concerns about the engine, if it is in good condition.
