Hey all,

I havea 1978 Rinkerbuilt Tri-Hull...

The Transom is rotten...

I need to fix/replace it. The outside is part of the hull, so its fiberglass. The inside is just wood. So its not a sandwich type..

I was thinking of that pour in type stuff, but it says that you need to have an inner and outter shell.. So it would not work for my use...

I'm not quite sure what to do in order to fix it...

Thanks for the help.

-TheChad

Hello Chad. I checked that stuff out, at some point, and seem to remember them saying that you could build an inner shell. you'd just cut the wood "skin" to fit for the inside shell, and then fiberglass that to the hull. Brace, and pour.

Why not just scrap / chisel / grind out the original timber from the inside, and glue a new piece of timber in? If you want, you can put a layer off glass over the inside as well.

Is it an I/O or an outboard configuration. Sea Cast would be difficult to manage if it is an I/O, because you have to deal with the hole, although my solution to that would be to simply cover the hole, pour the transom, and cut the sea cast out of the hole. In the end, just removing and glassing in new ply is cheaper, but you will need to remove the last foot or so of floor, and you may discover that the stringers and floor are shot as well. You may have an entire floor/stringer/transom job on your hands, but it isn't the end of the world. Just use the SEARCH function, there is a host of material on the subject. Good luck...

WARNING: This product is designed to be used as a sandwich core which MUST have
fiberglass reinforcements on BOTH sides. One customer did not follow the instructions;
he poured the Seacast with no fiberglass skins, mounted his motor directly on the seacast,
and his motor fell into the Kentucky River! Please review our Frequently Asked Questions.

Scarey... lol gives you a new outlook on the strength of fiberglass skins.

Hey Chad,

I'm currently working on a Larson Commander 21' in which the transom was rotton also. Same set setup as yours with just plywood glued to the inside portion of the transom and a thin layer of mat over the face of it. I had all fiberglass stringers built for it and I'm going to go the Seacast route instead of putting wood back in there. I've got all the wood removed from the transom, which was not an easy task. I'm not sure what they used to secure it to the transom, but it was tough stuff. When I had the stringers built, I also had them lay up a sheet that is 4x8 by 1/2" thick. This will be glassed in for the inner core. Mine is an I/O so I'll have to recut the hole for the outdrive. If all goes as planned, I'll be starting on this the weekend of the 29th working through my vacation all that week. So....should have all finished by the end of the week. I'll post some pics and let you know how it went.
