Hey all,

I am going to test drive a used 1978 Rinkerbuilt fiberglass boat with a 1979 40HP Mercury OB...

Unfortunitly I don't know much more information about it, like the model or anything, I think its a tri-hull but i could be wrong... I think its 14'...

With the limited information I have.... Are rinkerbuilt boats good boats??

Correct me if i am wrong, but a fiberglass boat shouldn't leak unless there is a hole, tare, puncture, etc in the fiberglass right? (Unlike aluminum where water can come threw rivets or welds)

The boat was owned by an older man, then he sold it to the person I want to buy it from, whom has had it about 1 year. He's only selling it for $850 with the trailer...

The floors will need to be replaced (well there is 1 place there there is about a 4" hole that was either broken out, or rotted out, but we are just going to put all new floors in), as well as new carpet, but i will take on that task myself. (hopefully it's pretty easy to do!)

When i go out on the water today, what all should i look for? I have already checked the steering linkage, it all moves freely, obviously i will verify the engine is running smoothly, and of course make sure the boat isn't leaking.... Is there anything else i should check?

This will be my first boat, I will probably keep it about 2 years, then sell/trade it for the boat i really want (Lowe Fish N Ski 17' w/ 115HP OB).

Thanks for the help..

-TheChad

A compression test on the motor will tell you of its condition.Make sure it pumps plenty of water and keep a close eye for temp fluctuation. The value is probably all in the trailer and motor.Charlie

If I do purchase this boat, Should i take it to a dealer for a tune-up, or testing of some kind right away?

I don't know for sure, but I think the engine is newer than the boat..

If I buy it, I will be able to get all the exact information..

Thanks for the help,

-TheChad

Chad, you are putting the apple cart before the horse. You should do any tests and have all the engine info BEFORE you buy it.These are critical hinge points on making the correct decision.Charlie

Well, We bought the boat... For $650..

It's a 15' 1978 Rinkerbuilt with a 1979 Mercury 40Hp 2-stroke.

It starts, will run for about 15 seconds, but wont stay running... The owner said it ran last summer, but he hasn't run it this year yet.

When it did run, it was spitting a full stream of water.

I don't know exactly why i wont run, my first thought is fuel pump, spark plugs, carb...

I We figured for $650, if we have to, we can purchase a used motor, if this one isn't worth fixing...

This is just going to be a starter boat for a year or two.

-TheChad
