Re: 1978 Riviera Cruiser C-20 restore

got all the fencing off last night and sitting in my garage. the boat is down to the edging and decking with carpet. that should be coming off in just a few weeks and then on with a new floor and carpet. the steering and shift cables are being a big pita. the cables are pretty much stuck and i won't be reusing them anyway so i'll probably resort to just cutting them off

carpet (astroturf) is gone

i also got all the wood floor up but was too dark to get a pic. the wood was actually in pretty decent condition, just the screws that were used to secure the plywood to the braces were mostly rusted through so it felt like a rotten deck when you walked across it with all the movement and noises. the underside of the wood had been sprayed/brushed with some kind of material that looked like a truck bed coating or tar.

got to hurry and get the toons cleaned and brightened up. the new decking is already at the lumberyard waiting for me to pick up.

Might be worth your while to check out a local sign shop. They could make up complete vinyl panels with graphics to adhere to your existing panels.

kbish,
For cleaning the toons go to any A/C supply house, they have A/C coil cleaners (aluminum) and it works wellat removing grime and stains and cheaper than the Sharkhide cleaner. Then use your Sharkhide to polish.

As far as your pannels are concerned, look at the products that are available at www.pontoonstuff.com and [url]www.everythingpontoon.com. I used the vinyl from pontoonstuff and it was around $120.00 for a 100' role.

Do a search for a1nowell on this forum and find a slideshow of my rebuild and you can see for yourself.

Good luck and keep up the post, you'll be a Commander in no time.

little more work completed. the logs are all cleaned up now (still have a few miscellaneous aluminum pieces to clean up but that's the easy part). and $430 later i have my 5 sheets of 3/4" marine grade plywood sitting in my garage and awaiting for me to order my carpet and decking kit from pontoonstuff.com so that i can lay it all down one weekend in the not too distant future

started briefly with JJV's Best but got too expensive with shipping so did the majority of them with Zing Formula IV

Hey kbish,

Looking good on the wood and the nice clean toons! I'm actually looking for my own pontoon project to take on, so I will be watching this thread closely. I do have one question right now: Do you have any pics of how the aluminum edge on the deck attaches? That peice has been my biggest concern while I've been looking for a project.

Keep up the great work!

P.S. - What kind of plywood did you use for your deck? Marine?

I am using 3mm NUDO poly metal. Aluminum both sides poly in the middle. Available at most plastic sheet stockers. $60 to $80 4' x 8'.

sorry for the lengthy delay, not much progress. i got the carpet glued down and bolted the rails back on but haven't decided what color exactly to paint the old orange panels.

i don't have any close up pics of it, but it's basically just an 'L' shape edging that bolts through the plywood and through the floor railing. i had to get some longer bolts as the 3.5" that came with my flooring kit were too short. i think i got some 5" or 5.5" long bolts. also yes it is marine grade plywood to the tune of about $80 a sheet (5 sheets)

i'm hoping to come back with a vengeance this spring on the pontoon. i may have that other pontoon in some of the pictures sold after the beginning of the year. the only thing that might slow me down is if all 4 of our boys decide to play soccer again

It is a little more work and expense but bolting the wood to the crossmembers gives you a much stronger boat, the wood on the deck is what gives the boat its rigidity and is a stressed member of the boat.

You want elevator bolt, they are flat on top so they sit flush with the deck and also make sure your panels are nice and tight before you bolt or screw them down, any space between the wood will result in flex and early wear.

i contemplated using elevator bolts on this build but opted to use screws instead and plenty of them. i wanna say that i used somewhere around 120-140 screws on 5 sheets of 4'x8' decking. that deck isn't going anywhere and is very solid.

haha, guess we'll see if i'm doing it right. i've spent A LOT of time browsing and researching this rebuild. the only thing i actually have concerns about will be when i get the motor off and "freshen" it up to include fresh paint. as least i gave fair warning that i may be slow to update this ;).
