Having a little trouble locating a part.... On the starboard side of the carburetor there is what appears to be an overflow tube that runs from the carb back down to the cylinder head/manifold. It's about 7' long or so and looks like it was wrapped with something, perhaps a heat shield of sorts... Looking at diagrams it doesn't show up on the carb diagrams and the one that shows up on the head diagrams looks to be the crankcase vent to the flame arrestor.... Any thoughts or suggestions?

Is this the choke tube?

Got a picture BD55, there should be a clear plastic tube going from the carb to the fuel pump and a steel one from the choke assembly gown and into the exhaust/intake manifold to heat the choke spring.

The fuel line from the pump is solid, this is connected to the carb on the opposite side and runs down to the head/manifold (actually kind of between the head and manifold)... Appears to be wrapped in a fabric heat shield. It is rusted off completely...

If that's not the fuel inlet line then it pretty much has to be the line that goes to the fuel pump that in case of a diaphragm rupture it sends the fuel to the carb.

That is the tube for the heat stove it would have gone into the fitting on the side of the carb in the fitting on the choke, with the black circular disc. Carefully remove the fitting from the choke housing and you will see the flared end just like a brake line. I had to make a new one for my 120 as it was rusted off as well. If it is solid further down don't try to remove it from the manifold or it will break off just slice it.

I'll have to do some tinkering Watermann. I work mainly from my phone and the advanced icon doesn't show up there for some reason... I'm with you though, these darn bifocals make it hard when looking for numbers stamped on things in tight places...

Dirve.jpgOk, looks like I got the little pic thing figured out.... A little help from those with Mercruiser experience, what model drive is this? I can't find any numbers on it anywhere, if they were there they've been covered with paint...

Looks like a MC-1
If you scroll down on this link it shows the different types.

Also, this link from the Mercruiser section has a lot of good info

Pulled the outdrive off last night just to check everything out. Came off easier than any drive I've ever taken off. U-joints look new but will get fresh grease, gimbal bearing looks and feels new. Bellows feel good and look solid but I will replace them as a preventive measure. This boat was well serviced before being put up for such a long time.

I looked the drive over from top to bottom and can find no numbers on it anywhere, I looked in the places it's supposed to be but there's nothing there??? No numbers on the housing or transom assembly either...

Is is wrong that I want to change the color? This 70's green is almost more than I can take....

That's great news on the OD! One of the things I do as told by a local MC tech was to put a light layer of bearing grease on the OD to bell housing gasket so it won't become stuck together and need pried apart. Good idea to change out the bellows. Be sure to pull and check and the lower shift cable too while you have it apart. If the cable looks good clean it up. I would split the OD case and replace the impeller before use. It would also be a good idea to check the alignment before putting it back together.

The old MC1 OD's I had when I got my Chief didn't have any numbers on them either. My Alpha One has the transom assembly, OD and motor serial ID tags all on the motor, valve cover and flame arrestor.

The 70's has left the building, avocado green wouldn't be my choice of colors either.

On my MC-1 the serial number was on the port side of the drive under the Mercruiser decal, just below the vent hole.

Checked the alignment... tool went in smooth, seems perfectly aligned :) Things are going so well I keep looking over my shoulder...
