My 1979(or near abouts) 4hp, model 40, 2cylinder has no tell tale water stream while running, should it? I don't see water streaming anywhere on it while running it. Please let me know, Thanks.

P.S. I just got this motor running for the first time since getting it so I don't know how it was before!

Yes, it should have an indicator stream. I believe it's on the starboard side under the edge of the belly pan. Check every single connection from the intake all the way to the powerhead. If there are any exhaust leaks into the water system it won't cool correctly and will overheat. Some of them had a little hole on the back of the motor built into the back of the belly pan that the water exits from. Mine is a n '83 and it exits in the aforementioned location.

The impellor may need changing. You can try using weed wacker line to see if you can get the TT free of debris. If that doesn,t work Check the water line going into the fuel pump. if that don,t work try to disconnect the hose that comes off the nylon fitting exiting the exhaust port cover. If no stream drop the lower unit and check the water pump. Get all fns that are not on the impellor. If any are missing your gonna have to try to backflush it to get the fins out. If that don,t work you have to remove the powerhead to get them unless there. Or the exhaust port cover. Star there if you need my help i,m usually here. You have a 4 hp? ok use what you can from this post I had a 1979 40 2 cycle 2 stroker working wITH A 1979 70 hp at present. GOTTA LOVE THESE OLD MERCS!!
