1979, 70 hp evinrude no air filter & lots of loose fiberglass how bad is t

I just got this boat and motor a month or two ago, and under the motor cover the old insualtion has deteriorated so bad that the motor was covered with yellow fibers. I cleaned all of it off and put new in so i decided to clean the air filter took the cover off and to my suprise there was no filter, so i go to the manual and it does not refer to a air filter. If all this fiberglass has been sucked thru the carbs.and motor will it destory my motor?

There are no filters. Just an airbox to route the airflow. Yes, the possibility is there that fibers may have been sucked in. Get a quart of fiberglass and repaint the inside of the cover in resin. This will seal in the fibers. New sound proofing can also be glued in as well. Good thing you caught the problem.

Bob

The stuff is not all that fine, so there is probably no issue. You can take off the air horn around the carb, and make sure there is not debris. You can also take a look into the throat of the carb once it's in the open and see if you spot anything. If you can see debris in the carb, it would be a good idea to pull the carb off and clean it. Chances are, though, there won't be anything in there. It sounds as if the motor probably sat for quite a while, and it probably wasn't operated in the state you found it.
