1979 80 HP Merc goes fwd in reverse

Well, after sitting for 20 years we got our boat out on the lake yesterday. We have replaced the impeller and cleaned the carbs, fuel lines, etc. She ran very well yesterday and I was rather pleased overall. However, when we shifted to reverse the engine pushed us forward. Anyone have any ideas?

You need to drop the unit put it and the upper in rev and reinstall it.
