To install a temperature gauge, the sender screws into the hole in the top of the head that is plugged with a stainless slotted pipe plug. Then you run a single wire to the dashboard and one terminal of the temperature gauge. Run another wire from the "I" or "A" terminal of the ignition switch to the positive terminal on the gauge. In operatino, with the ignition switch in run position, the "I" terminal has positive 12 volts. The "sender" Is a variable resistor that changes with heat. As it heats, resistance decreases, more voltage flows to ground, and the gauge reads higher.
You have the option of using the orange wire and disconnecting the buzzer but you can not attach both the buzzer and gauge to the same wire. If you want both you must run a separate wire.
If you want a pisser in addition to the gauge, you must drill and tap another hole in the top of the block., usually 1/8 NPT like the existing plugged hole.
The thermostat is located in the square cover on the top of the head.
If your engine is overheating only at full throttle, either the thermostat is stuck partially open or the water pump impeller inside the lower unit is wearing. Change the impeller as a matter of routine maintenance and the overheat will most likely stop.
Instructions for changing impellers are in the sticky FAQs at the top of the forum
