1979 Johnson 9.9 Water Exiting Exhaust Relief Holes

My 1979 has water coming out of the exhaust relief holes at idle. I just replaced water jacket, thermostat, power head manifold(where the spark plugs thread into), and water pump.

I have attached a video

Is it normal for that much water to exit in idle?

Did I see water dripping behind the coils or was it just splashing up? Idle sounds a bit as well.

Will it idle slower ?----Tell tale is weak.----Test with more water in the bucket.----More water coming out the relief holes then normal.

In the video, I had it above idle, in the “start” parameter on the throttle.

I took it out hunting this morning, telltale was still a bit weak and then once it warmed up and topped out, tell tale had drips coming out

Ran for 20 minutes on the lake with no overheating issues though

Previously I had overheating after 30 seconds to 1 minute of running in the lake, which drove me to change all the parts listed above

I think it was splashing up, I saw that as well but didn’t find any water leakage. Still torque checked the water jacket though, for good measure

Here is a video from my outing today

The tell tale quit peeing but the exhaust housing was lukewarm

And the exhaust relief holes still vented water

Could this be a sign of an open thermostat?

Water first goes in to cool the exhaust cover.----And water from the tell tale does NOT circulate through the block.----Did you install a new thermostat ?----What kind of boat ?----Is it running at full throttle in the above video ?

Yes it is a brand new thermostat in there, 1979 Johnson 9.9 motor on my 14 ft Jon boat

And yes it is at full throttle

Something is wrong !!-----At full throttle the boat should be going a lot faster.

Did you remove and blow out the pee tube?

Also, remove the fitting on the block that the pee tube sticks in, start the motor and see if it clears out. It likes to log jam there.

Hey OP, any update on your issue? I'm having the same deal with my 81 9.9 with water shooting from the exhaust relief hole.

I’m gonna be honest, I changed the water pump and removed the factory tell tale and replaced with a vinyl tube rated to 160 degrees so it wouldn’t melt. It still vents out the exhaust but I haven’t noticed a reduction in power or any significant problems. I run on a big lake and flooded Timbers all year for fishing and duck hunting. Chances are I need to change the exhaust housing gasket but I’m sending it until it presents a problem worth ripping into

Awesome, thanks for the reply!

I changed the water pump and gasket between the powerhead and now it's just blasting out the upper exhaust relief. There's good flow out the tell tale too. I'll probably start another thread once I run some more tests.
