1979 Pre Alpha Outdrive Crack ID

I just noticed a crack on the outdrive, Is this safe as it is? Or is it definitely worth repairing (which i think it is) If so, can you guys tell me if it's repairable and what that part is called, so that I can order it?

Absolutely not! You have a broken gimbal ring. That needs to be replaced before you run the boat again. This will give you an idea of what is involved: http://www.mercstuff.com/gimbalrings.htm

Ayuh,... Agreed,... Yer a heartbeat away from a catastrophic failure...

Used gimbel rings aren't too awful expensive though...
