Well just think, when all said and done, you can plunk down some money next year to get the outdrive resealed and freshened up, then the next year pull the motor and freshen it up, and you will have a like new boat for still less than a new one. And it is prettier to look at in my opinion. Hopfully your gel coat is as good as it look in the pics. A good polish and I bet it will look new.

Re: 1979 Sea Ray SRV 190 Deck/Foam

Hey guys,

Sorry it has taken me so long to get an update. I have finally found a guy that I can trust to tackle the transom for me. That has been what is holding me back. Anyway, I am getting ready to pick up all the supplies this weekend, and hope to be able to pick up some cheap poly resin from the guy doing the transom for me. I think I am going to stick with the poly since he is using poly to do the transom, and I don't want to mix poly with epoxy. Well, as soon as I get the boat back from the transom guy, i will start posting some pics of the stringer/deck job.

Plenty of questions to come.

Thanks,

Yorke

Alright, finally got the boat back and the transom is done. My quick question for now, which is proboly stupid, is do I add thr hardner to the poly resin when coating the stringer and deck boards? I got 5 gallons of resin, and I'm sure I will need more. Pics to follow soon of the first steps.

Thanks!

Re: 1979 Sea Ray SRV 190 Deck/Foam

Alright, so last night I got the stringers for the middle of the boat cut out. I am working on measuring the stringers that go along the perimeter of the hull. There is a gap, approximately 2 inches and it goes in a upside pyramid shape where the transom and the stringer meets. Do I have to fill in this area with a small piece of wood, or resin peanut butter, or do I have to do anything with it. When you look at it, the stringers only really touches the transom for about 3 inches. IT is very hard to describe, so I will try to post some pictures tonight when I get home from work.

Thanks,
Yorke

ok, here are some pictures of what I'm talking about. the pictures are just of the blueboard template I used, but was wondering about the gap at the transom? does it need to be filled in with reisn, wood, or something?
Thanks,

Lots more questions, and hopefully answers, to come

Yorke

Alright, well i worked the boat for 3 days straight, and didn't nearly get all that I wanted to get accomplished. However, I did get the hull cleaned out, the stringers cut, sealed, and bedded to the hull.

So heres the stringer boards

and here is one of the stingers in the boat
DSC05774Medium.jpg

I used a scab piece to attach the new stringer to the existing stringer using 8 5/16" stainless steel carriage bolts

DSC05772Medium.jpg

The scab pieces i used to attach the stringers to the old stringers were coated in resin and PL'ed to the existing and new stringer before bolting them in. right now, the stringers are just held in place with those bolts in the front and PL, and they are really strong. I am going to tab them in and cap them off tonight, so they should be super strong.

and heres a shot of the exterior stringers

So I got all the stringers bedded in over the three day weekend I had. YOu think you will have plenty of time, but the prep work and cutting took two full days. Actually putting everything in only took about 6 hours. I hope to get the deck installed this weekend. I'll update with some more pics later on.

Thanks

Hey Oops, thanks!

I do have one problem though, i can't figure how to get the fiberglass to lay over the top of the stringers without creating a big bubble.....any tips or tricks to get it to lay flat on the corners, or do I have to cut it, and fill in the gaps with resin. i'm just about ready to lay the deck down, but I have these bubbles on the top of the stringers that i'm not too happy about.

Re: 1979 Sea Ray SRV 190 Deck/Foam

Alright, well its been a while since I last posted. Since the last update, I have got the bulk heads installed, using PL and fiberglass mat. I have got the gas tank installed. I had a small problem with the gas tank. When I was removing everything during the tear down, i seemed to misplace one of the straps holding the gas tank in place, so I had to improvise and make a new one. Anyway, got the stringers capped, which was very difficult. Wound up putting the fiberglass up the side of the stringer, then cutting it, and laying a small piece on top of the stinger as a cap, then put another layer on the top of the stringer and along the sides, to avoid a huge bubble that formed when I just capped the stringers with one large piece of fiberglass.

I have got the deck installed. I glued the deck to the stringers with PL, then uses peanut butter to seal the edges along the hull and along the interior stringers, in the bilge area. Then, i screwed the deck down with SS screws and sealed the holes with PL and PB.

Ah, yes I forgot about the foam. poured 32 pounds of thew 2lb density foam into the cavity. The deck is solid as a rock now. I used the .5 inch ply, which is really about .44 inch or so, and it was a little flimsy when you stepped in the center of the board. After the foam was installed, the deck feels like its a rock. I feel the entire structure, stringers, deck and hull, are alot more ridged now with the foam in place.

Just finished fiberglassing the deck into the hull, and got all but about 2 SF finished, have to go pick up some more poly resin. But pretty much, the structure is done. Going to work on the carpet this weekend, and hopefully get her splashed soon..... So here are some pictures.

Thanks
stringers with fiberglass ready to be capped. there is the fuel lines, enclosed in a dryer vent....seemed like it would be a good idea, at least I would be able to pull the lines out from under deck if I needed to change them. Sea Ray just had those things held in there with a ton of 'not wetted out' engouth fiberglass and bilge vent hose I think...

shot of fuel lines nice and sealed up, to keep water out of there. I am pretty sure this was the area where water got under deck last time. There was just a huge gaping hole where the fuel lines exited the deck, that lead right to under deck

I will tell you, that stuff gets warm. I could feel the hull was nice and toasty after we poured all the foam in. And it the foam doesn't quite run as liquidy as I thought it would under deck. I had all kinds of voids I had to cut in the deck and fill with foam.

Re: 1979 Sea Ray SRV 190 (Finally got her back in the water)

Re: 1979 Sea Ray SRV 190 (Finally got her back in the water)

well, just thought I would say after many late nights gluing in carpet and getting the seats installed, we finally got this old Sea Ray in the water last night. Got the engine put back in last Friday. got all of the bellows changed, lower shift cable, and the gimble bearing replaced. Last year, during our curising with this boat, we were getting water in the blige all the time. Well the mechanic and the guy who fixed the transom for me told me that it was likely the transom flexing as force was applied to it. that is freaky

Anyway, last night we got her out on the water, and she ran like a champ. Not one drop of water in the bilge during the entire outing. The boat really leaned to one side, but I figured it had to do with the battery placement and the fact that we only had one seat in the boat, which was on the same side as the battery. The boat ran nice, got her WOT to about 41mph (speedo) at 3900 rpm. She turned and took corners a little nicer with those lighter, non-water logged rotted stringers, transom, deck.

I have a few pictures, but will post them later, as I dont' have them with me at work. Planning an all day outing on Friday, so will snap lots of pictures then. Just wanted to say thanks to all of the posts I have read over the time it has taken me to finish the re-building of this old classic.

some recent pics of the boat on the water!

Finally!!! This is our trip to Lake Allatoona a few weeks ago. It was a prefect day for the first all day trip on the newly rebuilt boat. She still has the old interior, but has new carpet. I am going to work on the interior this winter!
