Hi all. I have a new to me 1979 14' V hull sea nymph. I plan on using it here at the lakes with my 6hp outboard with 3 gallon tank and then in the bay and cruising to the kelp beds here in San Diego with my 18hp evinrude with 6 gallon tank. Now when I got this boat the previous owner didn't know a lot about it. He merely used it as a boat for he and his buddies and took really good care of it. it seems to only have one accident spot where it looks like a rock split a 6" seam in the bottom rivet line and then someone re welded it back up so now you only see a dimple on the outside and a tiny bit of messy welding on the inside. Other then that its been painted white on the upper half and the seats are original and still have all their foam in them and intact.

I filled it up with about 2 feet of water and found a few leaky areas. What I did was went around with some west systems Six 10 epoxy (aka boat in a bottle) and filled in all the leaky seams and around the leaky rivets. The Guys at west marine said this would last way longer then even re riveting and would be a lot stronger.... Guess ill find out.

What I plan on doing is adding a bait tank, a storage cabinet with cutting board on top and somewhere having a fish finder station where ill have my FF mounted and my handheld VHF with a few cup holders etc. Ive always dreamed about a 19' center console bay boat. And as a college student that isn't happening for awhile so ima make this little guy into the smaller version of what I want later. For the bait tank I have a vittles vault dog food bin that ill modify. Im still working on other stuff. I ordered a bow and stern light so if I fish at dark im good to go. I also got some marine paint from home depot that's made by rustoleum. Ill have the bottom of the inside gray, upper half and seats will be white, exterior bottom will stay natural silver, and then a short streak of white then blue the rest of the way up. Also on the interior I was thinking of adding a deck made of ply wood but low just off the bottom enough to get rid of the V/U contour of the bottom of the boat, also so any water that seeps into the boat stayes under the removable floor boards ive designed in my head. Im also thinking of doing a outdoor carpet over the wood.

Now here are my questions.

1) What is the max weight load?
2) Max HP rating
3) Anyone have pics of a v hull 14' that was modified with decks or bait tanks? (ocean worth not bass boat top heavy kind)
4) Any way to make more buoyant?
5) Any way to make more stable?

Any and all comments, pics or recommendations are accepted :)

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Sounds like ya need to start with a Bigger boat,....

'bout the only way to make it more stable is a wider boat,...
The Only way to make it more buoyant is displace more water,.... aka; a Bigger boat,...

Yer wantin' to put 10 gallons of poo, in a 5 gallon pail,...

It does sound like you might need a bigger boat....

Here are some pictures of what I did to my 14 foot boat. The floors are plywood covered in carpet with a 2x4 base sections for support. The front deck was also an addition, as well as a bilge pump, locator, and navigation lights. I never added a bait tank or a live-well because quite frankly there just ins't enough room. Its near impossible to do anything but drift fish or troll with a single rod.

The boat still gets up and moves with the added weight of the floor, and is about as stable as a 14ft tin boat can be. I have gotten into situations with it where the conditions were just too much for that boat, and that was on inland lakes.

Re: 1979 Seanymph 14'question...

First of all, you didn't give a model number. SN made a bunch of different boats, and they differ in capacities. I own a 14R, which is the deeper version of their utility. So I can only speak to that model.

Mine is a 1964 and we have owned her for 27 years now. She handled 2 adults and 2 teenagers very well. The Max HP is 25, but I can't remember the total capacity. I've run 9.9's up to a 25 and the 25 was dangerously overpowered. The largest motor I would use would be an 18.

The boat is not suited for all of the add-ons you have in mind. If you have to go that route keep the engine to a 9.9 or less, and limit it to no more than 2 people aboard.

Note that the hull is problematic for rib breakage, so be sure to keep the speed low and keep an eye on the hull's integrity. Ribs are easy to sister, but don't run with more than a couple broken.

I have no idea what model. # on the back says seac5646m79c. And yes as most of you have said ill tone down the options of what I want to add to it.

As for the bottom ribs, is it a bad idea to seal them to the floor with six 10 epoxy?

I would say your 14 footer would be maxed at 15 HP but the 18 would be fine. 3 persons max or 400 Lbs motor persons and gear. It's easy to overload a small boat and make it unstable. Post some pics of your new SN. Also check out the official sea nymph thread here for some boat ideas.

You did kinda what I want to do but I want to add a bait tank. As for all the other stuff my boat isn't big enough :p Oh well. But I am able to have a under deck storage hatch in the bow area, a cooler with cutting board glued to the top, small bait tank (just bigger then a kayak size one), and then in the rear im going to re use the previous owners box think which is like a cabinet to store stuff in. It has two legs that straddle the bench seat so ill mount my fish finder to that :) Other then that ill add a low deck in the two bigger sections and put the carpet on it. And then its ready to test it in the water!

As for more flotation. I saw a couple guys get some 4" ABS pipe and put end caps on them. They had one on the rear and then a longer one running down each side of their boat. Said it helped it float better and not be so tipsy. Looked tacky but interesting idea.

Re: 1979 Seanymph 14'question...

I wouldn't add anything to the outside of the boat. Something that may or may not add some stability at rest is likely to very unstable at speed.

With the 25hp (which is what mine is rated for) it can get pretty unstable at WOT if you aren't careful. It doesn't take much to hit a wave funny are turn too fast. I can't imagine how badly a small boat like that would react if those pipes hit the water wrong.

For reference....these boats can move with some power

Daaaannnnng that thing is flying! Hmm yea I wish I knew the specs on my boat.... Im probably overthinking all this but idk... I find it hard to believe 400lbs is the max for this thing. It seems big compared to this short and low 12' ive got that's a sea king. The PO told me that that one had a 350lb weight limit. And its half the size of my 14'.

Design makes a difference. I had one and believe 15 hp was what was on it,,, 2 people, motor, fuel, safety equipment and a battery not much room for error. Just 2' more will make a big difference especially if designed with steering ~ NO tiller. A 14'er is not what you want. Sell it and now and find a deal on a bigger boat.

The 14'er is twice the size as the 12'er and here is the capacity plate from my 16'er which would be twice the size of the 14'er. So if you want to say 600 Lbs is your max using this formula then have at it!

Here is iboats general boat specs page.

600lbs seems more like it. Would be nice to find someone with the same boat so I can see what my plate really said.lol

I'd have no prob getting a bigger one but I have no where to keep a bigger one since I live at home cuz college is only 10 min away. I keep my boat with my project truck in my friends garage down the street and its the max length that will fit. My yard at home has enough toys in it so parents don't want another lawn ornament haha

No question, that's a 14R. Read my post above for comments. Just google it and you'll find the total specs. If you can't find them, say so and 'll look them up tonight.

pay close atention to my comments about ribs. Don't cover them up! You may need to fix them later.

I was going to make removable floor boards. How do the ribs break? Cuz they seem very solid. The previous owner use to take 4 guys to baja and cruise around fishing for yellow tail and grouper. He said he never had any issues and there doesn't seem to be any after looking over the boat. That's why I'm wondering if I should epoxy the ribs with six 10 from west systems to make it stronger just in case.

Nice boat! I have a 1980 16.5 Sea Nymph. I had contemplated doing a lot of the stuff you are thinking about but decided I would prob be better off selling it and upgrading to something more to my liking. Now I have 2 boats. lol

Anyways if thats not an option for you just put in some flooring and bring a cooler or 2. One for your bait and one for either storage or food/drinks. Paint it and call it good.

Took 4 guys?? 5 in that boat was overloaded without motor, fuel, or equipment.
