my motor runs good but doesn't have a good hole shot to get my big *** out of the water easily for skiing, it is a 235 hp. motor on an 18 ft. checkmate exciter, I checked the compression and all six are lingering around 100 pounds. I had a problem with it flooding until I got rid of the junk champions and put in NGK. It still runs a bit rich. The prop is a 14.5/19/3 blade. I'm told that this thing should 'pull a house down with torque' but so far I am not impressed. Any input is good, I have 2 cycle knowledge but boats are a little heavier than sleds. All else fails, this thing will be my new anchor and the HONDA motor will be the heartbeat! HA! Thanks all.

Hi Ed,
Do you have an over rich gas mixture?
I would prefer those Champions over the NGK plugs myself as long as you have the correct plugs installed.Bogging down from start could be a problem with the carbs. Are those the original floats/seats in those carbs?Sounds to me you are either getting too much fuel or not enough when you "punch" it.
Another area to check would be the Timing on the motor.Maybe the timing is off...
If you have good spark/compression,correct timing and tight carbs(check those pin seats) inside it should be able to pull down a house on that boat! Also,a lower pitched prop might help get you up on those ski's,like a 15x17? :)

Your boat should fly with the motor, prop and hull you have. In fact, I'm surprised you're not running a much higher pitch. I run a 14.5x20 cupped SS prop on a J140 on a 19' Sea Ray and get 5800 RPM WOT.

I would guess your boat would easily overrev and plane very quickly, unless you have some significant unresolved engine issues. I don't think your issues have anything to do with plugs, unless your running wrong ones.

Try "flooding carb" in the red Search at the top of the page. I would also check to see if all 6 plugs are firing.

When you get up on plane how does it feel? What is your max rpm at WOT?

Thanks reel, I need to get myself a book and look into the carbs, it really is getting too much fuel! Nothing agianst champion but my luck with them in harsh environments was not good. In this particular circumstance, (a flat faced plug) has more area to fire upon.

Thanks for your reply SOLITTLE, the boat gets up pretty good with me and the little lady on board, running up to around 60mph and about 5700rpm @ W.O.T. The boat doesn't feel bad but when trying to cruise at around 3000 to 3500 rpm it loads up and trys to settle back in the water. I've exhaustively checked and rechecked plugs for fire ect. I had a thought that the coils may be weak and the fuel isn't getting burned up right. Is there a way to check them for breakdown?

Well Greg I am 6'1" and 245 lbs. We just got a kneeboard and it drags it out of the water pretty good. The real trick is figuring out how to get on the thing right!
