My mint 1980 Johnson 35, Electric start, has an intermittent no spark prob. Starts from cold sometimes, runs then dies. No spark at both plugs. Have disconnected black and yellow (kill switch) wire from start switch, still bad. Wiring all looks good. Suspect fault may be heat related? Can CD black box have intermittent fault? Any clues?

Hi, Dave.

One of the most common failures of electronic devices like your powerpack is cold failure or hot failure. Works at one temp range and dies at the other.

This can be tested with a hair dryer or other heat gun. . .heating the parts while running on muffs.

Good luck. :)

Thanks JB for rapid reply. I ran her on muffs and heated the powerpack with a hairdryer but she kept running. Wiggled all wires etc. Still OK. Later fault re-appeared, would not start, nil spark. I have pushed the pin and socket of kill,(black and yellow) wire out of rubber plug that also has the 2 orange coil wires in it, and re-connected this wire external of the plug and shes running sweet. Maybe the kill wire was shorting in this connector. Time will tell.
Fingers crossed. If she dies again, I guess I will buy a new powerpack. ;)
