I recently bought a 1980 2 stroke 4 cylinder 50 hp mercury serial no. 5747128. When I bought it the previous owner started it and ran it for a couple of min. It was hard to start at that point. When I got it home I put the hose on it and got it started again but with no tell tale. Removed the lower end and impeller was destroyed. Cleaned it out, replaced it and found out starter was bad. Replaced it. Started it and water was leaking around spark plugs. replaced gasket. Got motor started and had tell tale. Motor kept stalling out. Took carbs off and cleaned them. There was gunk in bottom carb. Also had to replace tilt motor solenoid. Motor was hard to start but got it running but had to keep squeezing primer ball to keep running. Took carbs off again to inspect and clean needle valves. now it won' t start. Help!!

A fairly typical story I say.-----The previous owner started it for you with no water for the impeller ????----Sounds like fuel pump might be an issue.-----Or the fuel tank and hose are no good.

Previous owner did put the hose on it. The fuel line has been splced together and there was no fuel filter but I added one.
